French 19th Century Gold Gilt Barometer

Sold Sold
  • Description
A stunning gold gilt wall barometer, made in France during the 19th century. This hand-carved scientific weather instrument is a true work of art. The dial is faced in paper, which has had its numerals and lettering all hand-painted, and has styled hands. The face is encircled in a carved foliate wreath and flanked by two large, acanthus leaf scrolls. Above the dial is a winged hourglass which is surmounted by a thermometer. The top of the barometer is a carved human face with curled hair wearing a laurel wreath. A sunburst explodes from behind the carved face, shooting carved gilt rays into the universe. An absolutely gorgeous wall ornament that will elevate the sophistication of any room it may grace. c.1860.
