Tibetan Painted Door

Sold Sold
  • Description
Tibetan painted door, circa 1900. A canvas is applied to the door face and decorated using pigments (mineral colors) and lacquer. This door has strong patina showing age with raised lacquer work. An excellent example of Tibetan art and culture.

Buddhist symbols from top to bottom. Ribbons holding the jewels of Buddhism and bells of song. Two snow lions the emblem of Tibet (standing on lotus flower (purity and enlightenment) border the conch shell (dun) represents the spoken word of Buddha). The parasol (gdugs)- a token of loyalty and symbolizes the protection of the Dharma. A Dharma wheel represents the unity of all things. Surrounded by a fish pair representing conjugal happiness and freedom. Holding between them and endless knot (apal-be)- an auspicious geometric diagram, it symbolizes devotion and eternal harmony. All rising from the lotus flower (padma)- as the flower rises from muddy roots, so nirvana arises from this world bringing purity. All rising out of the earth across the bottom.
