Architectural Patent Design Model of a Swing Bridge

This is a patent design model created by Louis Simon of Chicago in 1876. Louis Simon was an industrial inventor. This model is to demonstrate his patent for automatic closing and opening security gates when a swing bridge is in operation. The bridge is turned side ways to allow ships that are too large to go under. The security gate arms at each end are automatically closed to prevent entry onto the bridge. The model is operated by a hand crank in the front which activates the gears below the bridge. As the bridge turns there is a curved rail on top of one end that opens and closes the gate arms. The other end the gate arms are operated from below by two rollers that are pushed down as the bridge is closed or raised up as the bridge swings open. This was a very innovative concept back in the 19 th Century. This is a large and heavy model in excellent condition. Included with the model is the original Louis Simon patent document dated 1876. Must be professionally crated for shipping.
