  • Description
    Sonia Delaunay (France, 1885 - 1979)

    Title: Serpent Noir
Signed “Sonia Delaunay”, dated “1971 décembre” and numbered “1/6”
Wool tapestry handwoven by Atelier Pinton, Aubusson
    311 x 148 cm; 58.3 x 122.4 in
    Edition: 1/6
    1971

The composition of "Serpent Noir" is divided into three main vertical parts and form a pseudo triptych which represents the different important periods of the works of Sonia Delaunay.

On the left, on a background of quadrilateral diverse colors, there is a waving black strip with a white line on, which implies the motif of scarf that she ornated in 1924. At the centre, the combination of the geometrical forms is inspired by a series of gouaches she made from the 1960s, which also reminds her another painting "Rhythm-Colour".

On the right, the vertically juxtaposed rectangles evoke the cover design of Blaise Cendrars’ Les Pâques, which was released in 1913. "Serpent Noir" is an important work of Sonia Delaunay which marks the artist's oscillation between the reinterpretation of ancient objects and the creations of new forms.
