Description
Late Georgian gold and enamel mourning ring In the late 18th century mourning rings featuring neoclassical sepia miniatures like this became extremely popular. These tiny paintings were done by hand and could be commissioned, or purchased ready made with blank spaces to be filled in with the initials of the deceased, or a saying, such as this one, “To, bliss. Not lost but gone before". The scene in this marquise shaped Navette ring depicts a bereaved husband by a classical funerary urn. on the verso is engraved: Mary Waddington. Died 24th October 1794 aged 50. Engraved 18 karat gold ring with enamel cartouche. joined with gold stretcher to centre or band.
