$ 25,000
  • Description
    Wool rug after Francis Picabia (France, 1879 – 1953)
    “Égoïsme”, circa 1950
    wool rug
    Measures: 210 x 150 cm; 6.9 x 4.9 ft
    Signed lower centre; signed and inscribed with edition “hors commerce” on verso.

    The rug was made after the original oil painting by Francis Picabia in 1947-1950, which is now in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.

    Surrealism is often associated with illusionist paintings depicting an impossible reality. But surrealism is above all a way of life based upon absolute freedom of the mind. Picabia is an example of someone who lived such a life. After meeting Duchamp he began to make ‘mecanomorphic’ works; thereafter he changed his style regularly and was both for and against surrealism. And “Égoïsme”, is a masterpiece of Francis Picabia’s late abstract practice.
