Description
Eye of Integrity I from the Stratified Jewels Collection, is a unique free-standing sculpture by the British / Cypriot artist Yorgos Papadopoulos. Incorporating black and white pigments with 24ct gold leaf and powder, fractured clear glass which is re-laminated in additional sheet glass, the artwork is housed within a striking haematite finish brass frame and stand.
Papadopoulos has reworked the iconic 'Evil Eye' amulet for this collection, also drawing from his own experience as a Cypriot growing up in the UK. Taking this simple composition as a starting point, the scale is blown up and the colours completely reworked. Using a pioneering technique he developed at the Royal College of Art, Papadopoulos combines pigments and shattered sheets of industrial glass which he then re-laminates to create architectural-scale artworks that look fragile but are extremely durable. His ability to exploit and harness accident has informed his entire working practice. His architectural panels create a stunning focus in cool modern spaces, the contrast between the unpredictable movement of fracture and the clean lines of contemporary architecture excite the eye.
In the artist's own words;
‘Glass is my canvas, hammers are my brushes’
Papadopoulos' work is represented in private collections globally and public collections including the Eskishihir Glass Museum in Turkey, Derix Glass Studio Taunusstein in Germany and the British Airways Art Collection - Heathrow T4. He is author of the A&C Black book Glass Lamination.
The sculpture can also be wall-mounted or hung, please enquire. Other styles and colours available. Bespoke and large scale architectural commissions can also be undertaken. -
