Cast aluminum sculptures on white Carrara marble bases by Peoria, IL artist Nita K Sunderland, circa 1970s. The abstract sculpture of a seated woman features a truncated stylized head. Signed NKS and numbered by the artist (numbers 1 and 3 in an edition of 5). In Italy during the 1960s Sunderland was intrigued by ancient caryatids and helmeted figures and in her native England she discovered medieval effigy figures on the tombs of royal and noble personages. Her sculpture figures are faceless or masked, metaphors rather than specific people. Stylized kings, queens and bishops standing guard or grouped with ruins of classically inspired columns. Each sculpture is priced individually. Consider using the pair as bookends. A few minor chips to the marble bases and light wear / patina to the aluminum sculpture -
