Achille Ernest Mouret (19th c.) French, "Villa Beausejour", 1840-60

  • Description
Achille Ernest Mouret (19th c.) French, "Villa Beausejour",
oil on canvas, signed and titled lower left,
    Image 12 ½" x 16"
    Frame 20" x 23 ½"

Achille Ernest Mouret was born in Paris and worked in Bonnieres-sur-Seine, 40 miles to the northwest. He worked as a painter of portrait miniatures, landscapes and still-lifes and exhibited at the Paris Salon and with the Societe des Artistes Francais from 1844-1888. [1.]

The architectural and topographical details in this painting are stunning- it's clear Mouret intended to capture a specific place and time. Unfortunately, Villa Beausejour was a common name for houses and hotels throughout France, so the exact whereabouts of this bucolic scene are lost for now.

[1.] See Benezit, "Dictionary of Artists". See also Natalie Lemoine-Bouchard, "Les Peintres en miniature 1650-1850".
