French 19th Century Steel Jura Wine Barrel
-
Description
This fabulous painted steel wine barrel, c. 1850, is from Lons-le-Saunier, a town in the Jura department of France known for its production of Jura wine which is similar to Burgundy. The steel and layers of old red and green paint have developed a wonderful patina over time. It is mounted with a pair of cast-iron handles and three cast-iron legs. The interior is outfitted with an overflow spout down one side which would allow the excess wine to be emptied into a vessel below thus insuring none is wasted. The brass shield is inscribed: “HECTOLITRES/JURA/GAY A LONS LE SAUNIER.” The handle of the large brass spigot is stamped: “GARDON”on one side and “A MACON” on the other. Every winery would have had one of these barrels and customers would bring a vessel and place it under the spout to fill with the desired amount of wine. The vintner would charge for the wine by using a measuring stick to determine how much was in the barrel before and after being poured into the vessel as not every all were of equal size. Filled with ice this barrel would make a great wine cooler your next event!
