Description
A William IV 20 inch terrestrial globe by Cruchley, set on a carved oak stand the four ribs and three scrolling legs united by an acanthus carved baluster, with the original compass rose and castors, the papers updated to 1853 and inscribed ‘Cruchley’s New Terrestrial Globe… Exhibiting the latest discoveries towards the North Pole and …Australia, New Zealand, California, Texas etc, London, O.F.Cruchley, …81 Fleet St. 1853.’ English, c1830.
Footnote: George Frederick Cruchley (1796-1880) trained as an apprentice to the mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith and opened his own firm in 1823. Alongside his own successful business as an engraver, globe and map seller and publisher, he produced maps and globes under the Cary name between 18844 and 1876. Some of his most popular publicatons included travel maps and guides of London, the British Isles and Europe. -

Starting out as a ‘man with a van’ he quickly gained a good reputation and embarked on a longstanding relationship with Harrods. He was later joined by his wife, Caroline Wallrock. Caroline having completed a Persian degree, went on to study at Christie’s fine art and then joined Sotheby’s specializing in Islamic and Japanese works of art
