Description
This rug was made for sale out of handspun natural wool and wool dyed with synthetic dyes. In the center is a very realistic looking woman in a traditional Navajo dress, including indigo blue-dyed wool which would have been in an early Navajo dress.
The use of this rare and valued dye indicates that this woman has a great deal of stature. In fact, the figure represents Spiderwoman as she emerges from the lower world, in effect giving birth to the Navajo people. The other designs are variants of what is known as the Spiderwoman cross, an abstracted way to represent Spiderwoman and the creation myth. -
