  • Description
Pair of Danish Cabinetmaker "Polar" Chairs, Denmark 1940s

This unique 1940s pair of “Polar” chairs is a great representation of the quality and craftsmanship of Danish master cabinetmakers and the immediately recognisable characteristics of Scandinavian design.

The slender wooden legs prevent the chairs from looking heavy, while their warm brown colour nicely contrasts the soft, light colour of the body. The welcoming, rounded shape of the voluminous arm- and backrests is a signature characteristic of Danish Modernism. The backs are lightly bent and have stylish button tufting. The tufting stitches are festooned with five buttons on each chair, and along with the fabric, the chairs give a natural, textured look. This pair of chairs is ideal to blend a stroke of modernity to any space, with a nod to organic, simple artistry.

The upholstery is one of a kind. The pair has recently been reupholstered in a premium wool and alpaca blend by Pierre Frey, an inventive French family business founded in 1935 that combines fine craftsmanship and modernity. As a member of the Colbert Committee since 1976, Pierre Frey fabrics are of the highest quality. Alpaca hide is unique compared to other types of hide as it is extremely soft. This is due to the quality of the fiber. Alpaca fiber is as soft as cashmere, but has a smoother cuticle that can make the fiber feel even smoother and softer than cashmere. Furthermore, the individual shaft of an alpaca fiber is measurably smoother than that of other natural fibers and has great insulating qualities, providing light yet warm fur.

These armchairs are the perfect illustrations of how the pairing of Danish design, the work of a true cabinetmaker, and luxurious upholstery create exceptional pieces. ~H.
