Price Upon Request
  • Description
Probably New Lebanon, NY, circa 1800-1820

Length 7 3/8 inches. Excellent condition with original dry salmon with nice patina.

This box is characteristic of the earliest Shaker prototype boxes made at New Lebanon, New York, decades before the mechanized production of boxes in uniform shapes and sizes.

Attributes of these early boxes are:
A less narrow oval shape Fingers of a slightly blunted form with pronounced chamfering
Box sides made of ash of a slightly greater thickness than later machine milled boxes
The use of tiny irons tacks
Likely made without a mold or patterns, as evidenced by the compass marks under the lid.
