Painted and Inlaid Flag Table

Sold Sold
  • Description
Signed “Made & Designed by F. Wedin, Roxbury” (for Frederick F Wedin (1812-1898) inside drawer. The second of the two tables known by Frederick Wedin, the top of this example is a 35 star flag, symbolizing West Virginia’s statehood in 1863. The side supports resemble anchors, the legs are formed like cannons, the cross braces are shaped like rifles and the feet like cannonballs. Two carved dueling pistols and a pyramid of ammunition are carved on the face of the drawer.

Wedin was born in 1812 in Denmark and immigrated to Boston in 1836. On his entry papers he was listed as a piano forte maker. He became an American citizen in 1854 and appears to have become an ardent patriot, celebrating the American flag on this and at least one other similar table that sold at Sotheby’s.
