17th Century French Walnut Chest-of-Drawers

$ 14,000
  • Description
    17th century French walnut chest of drawers (circa 1675-1700) hand-carved in a provincial Louis XIII style (Mannerist with Italian influence).

    Extremely sturdy, almost completely original. Constructed using mortise and tenon joints, horse glue and forged iron nails. Uprights are heavily carved with hanging garland and scroll motifs.

    Drawer fronts are adorned with flattened foliage carved in relief with later incised carved wheels on either end of each drawer. Drawer interiors are original and open easily without a hint of difficulty. Drawer sides partially overlap fronts and are secured with iron nails and exhibit remnants of horse glue. Iron key opens working locks.

    Scrolled feet are not original (probably early to mid-18th century replacements). Wood patches are evident in a couple of spots. Some light worm damage (chest has been fumigated). Finish returned to its current polished state by an expert hand. Chest purchased in Italy but came from a large house full of French antiques.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor worm damage (has been fumigated). Some wood patches. Replaced feet (probably replaced in the early to mid 18th century). Working locks with key. Very sturdy and excellent condition. Opens with key as originally intended. Knobs can be added for minimal cost.
