Cubist Art Deco Silvered Bronze & Relief Frosted Glass Chandelier by Daum Nancy
-
Description
This exceptional chandelier was realized by the esteemed by brothers Auguste and Antoine Daum brothers from their studio in Nancy, France. The Daum brothers exhibited their glass wares at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. The majority of products they produced were in Cameo glass- a technique involving carving multiple coats of colored glass to reveal layers below. Thus, this chandelier represents a rare and especially sought after example of their practice. The central shade- consisting of four glass panels- as well as the other four bell-shaped shades feature cubist designs, reminiscent of the mechanomorphic forms present in the work of Fernand Léger. The silvered bronze arms have stylized sunburst and cloud motifs, suggesting a sunset or perhaps allegorically alluding to the dawning of a new modern age. This fixture accommodates an Edison bulb in the centre (behind the largest shade), and one candelabra based bulb in each of the smaller ones, for a total of five bulbs. The height can be adjusted to suit. It has been newly rewired to American standards and is in excellent condition.
