Stone Fragment of Buddha Gandhara
-
Description
A carved stone Buddha head of Gandahara style, a fragment from a larger statue mounted on a display stand, circa 2-4th century. Gandhara is the name given to an ancient region or province invaded by Alexander the Great, who took Charsadda , near present day Peshawar in Pakistan and then marched eastwards across the Indus into Punjab in India and on as far as the Beas river (ancient Vipasa). This sculpture is carved with a distinctive Greco-Buddism art style heavily influenced by Hellenistic naturalistic aesthetics. The face still retains some pigments outlining the eyes, lips and neck. The back of the Buddha head is uneven, indicating it might be a high relief statue that was attached to a wall. On a display stand as shown. The head itself is 8' in height.
