Description
Pair of gilt bronze mounted porcelain vases in manner of Sèvres
French, 19th Century
Height 35cm, width 18cm, depth 11.5cm
This Sèvres style porcelain vases in this pair are mounted with gilt bronze. The overall design scheme is exceptionally ornate, the bronze casting and the painted porcelain betraying the Louis XV style. Most unusually, each vase is shaped like an ewer, a further ornate flourish. The green-ground porcelain body of each vase is painted, within a gilt frame front and back, with Rococo style scenes of birds and flowers. The green ground of the porcelain is accented beautifully by the golden gilt bronze mounts, which are richly cast in a foliate manner.
Each vase is supported by a circular gilt bronze base, which continues along each side of the vase to meet the ewer-form mount at the top. Most ornately, each vase is mounted with a dragon-shaped gilt bronze handle, further emphasising the playful nature of this most ornate of styles. -
