Regency Brass Perdonium/Coal Scuttle
-
Description
This is a superb example of a brass Regency Purdonium or coal scuttle that dates to c. 1800-1825. The base features highly detailed cast brass lion-head handles and chiseled articulated lion paw feet. The vessel is surrounded by neoclassical drapery and applied rosettes. The lid is surmounted by a finely cast flame finial.
The purdonium has seen two centuries of use and has acquired great natural patina. The lid has dings and dents, which are to be anticipated with every day use. The diameter of the vessel is 13.5; the protrusion of the lion-head handles brings the width measurement to 17.5. -
