Gilt Wrought Iron Mirror, 18th c.

Sold Sold
  • Description
Gilded wrought iron mirror, the elaborate repousse leaf, flower and scroll elements riveted to the iron frame, the glass a later addition.

    39" max width
    Glass approx. 17" x 15"

This exuberant mirror almost certainly started life as a trade sign, perhaps that of a farrier. Farriers were blacksmiths who also shoed horses and it's not hard to imagine this sign, the shape of which suggests a horse collar, framing a sculpted or cast horse head and hanging outside a blacksmith shop.

    Continental, probably German c. 1750
