Description
This lidded Tlingit rattletop basket has very fine weave and an elegant meander design. Having been twined with the use of the technique of false-embroidery, the design shows on the outside of the basket but not on the inside. Seeds were woven into the lid so that the lid would “rattle” when picked up. These baskets are clearly not ones made to be used in daily chores. We wonder if they were made to give as gifts or to store the woman’s “treasures”?
The Tlingit live near the coast of Vancouver on up to the coast of Alaska. -
