Museum quality piece!!
GORGEOUS, RARE and IMPORTANT mid 19th Century Anglo-Indian Sewing Box made in Vizagapatam, India circa 1860.
The Box is made of sandalwood but covered in sections of carved Antler Horn and bone.
The fitted interior is classic Vizigapatam work, bone/faux ivory compartments hand painted and decorated with lac ink (made from crushed beetles to make an indelible ink).
The top of the box has a hand carved coiled finial reminiscent of a coiled snake, likewise on the carved and coiled bun feet.
The interior has five lidded compartments for storage. It has the original spool for thread that rotates in position as you would unspool your thread.
It has its original thimble and lidded thread canister.
It has to red velvet sections for needles, pins etc.
The inside of the lid is likewise, decorated with lac painted bone banding and a central carved flower finial.
The interior is edged with ebony veneer.
It has its original lock.
