Irish Stained and Hand-Painted Glass Panel of Fairy and Leprechaun, Unique

Sold Sold
  • Description
Gorgeous and unique stained glass and hand-pained panel in frame.

Definitely Irish mid-19th century, circa 1860.

The frame has been made later and the panel mounted on it. The frame is rather rustic in construction but in a 'funny way' adds to the feel of the piece!!
The panel is constructed of stained glass with 3 central hand-painted panels depicting 3 scenes of:

A Girl Fairy meeting a Leprechaun as he works mending shoes on a toadstool (Mushroom).
The Fairy woo's the Leprechaun and they kiss, snakes appear either side of the Toadstool.
The Fairy takes off and leaves the Leprechaun who appears to turn into a Toad/Frog.
This piece is so unique and rare that you will never find another like it. Its depiction of Irish Folklore is simply magnificent.
You will note that the depiction of the Leprechaun is not the modern interpretation of what a Leprechaun looks like. He more closely resembles what we now regard as a Garden Gnome, with his little red hat and shoes, but it is definitely a Leprechaun, as he is depicted classically repairing shoes on his toadstool.

This clearly indicates that the panel has some age to it, as it is not attempting to mimic the modern interpretation of a Leprechaun with his large hat, beard etc. This is only a modern development for St. Patrick's Day!! Kind of like the modern day image of Santa being a creation of Coca-Cola in the early 20th century!
