Antique Sampler, 1837, Woodcock by Mary Staley. The sampler is worked in fine wool on a linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours red, blue, pink, green and brown. Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Staleys Work 1837'. Titled, 'The Chinese Woodcock'. A wonderful central motif of a bird perched in tree, carrying a flowering branch in it's beak.Framed in an old, possibly original, black ebonised wood frame, with rippled old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to linen and stretched over board. Frame backed with paper.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
