Vintage Spanish Chocolate Brown and Ivory Handwoven Wool Carpet

$ 18,000
  • Description
    A mid century area rug from Spain on a chocolate brown background with an ivory trellis design framed by a ribbon design border.

    Retaining the idiosyncratic structure of the Spanish knot, early Hispano-Moresque antique carpet weavers employed the method of a single-warp knot in their carpets. The original bright red and blue colorations of these antique Spanish rugs have faded over time into the muted gold and blue tones now associated with antique Spanish carpets. Neoclassical and Turkish influenced pieces were made in the workshops of Quenca. In 1712 Charles III founded the Real Fabrica de Tapices Manufactory in Madrid and produced European style vintage rugs to compete with the sophisticated French workshops of Aubusson and Savonnerie.

Message from Seller:

Founded in 1965, Doris Leslie Blau’s rug emporium is the stuff of design legends. For decades it was known as the go-to source for those seeking the best in the unusual antique and avant-garde. Now owned by Nader Bolour, to whom Doris turned over the business, the gallery has not only continued the tradition of carrying the best of antique and vintage pieces, but has also forged ahead to create unique and innovative contemporary and custom rugs as well.
