Exceptional Japanese Ceramic Figure in Knotted Wooden Stand

Sold Sold
  • Description
Presenting an exceptional Japanese ceramic figure (in the style of a mudman) in knotted wooden stand.

This is a simply gorgeous piece!

Made in Japan circa 1920 it is marked but we cannot identify the mark, but it is obviously by a ‘top’ maker as the quality is exceptional.

It features a somewhat ‘grumpy’ looking old man leaning on his staff and carrying a gourd in his traditional kimono attire.

The kimono is white with a crackled effect glaze. The gourd is a brown drip glaze. The head, arms and hands are likewise glazed, which is similar to mud men but different. Most mud men have unglazed heads and arms and the pottery looks like dried mud … hence the term ‘Mud Man’.

The ceramic man then fits neatly into an absolutely stunning piece of exotic and heavily knotted piece of Japanese wood.

We have absolutely no doubt that these two pieces were made together.

They were bought by an art/antique dealer in New York in Japan in the 1960s.
