The Danes call it Hygge, the Swedes Lagom, and the Norwegians, Friluftsliv. When it comes to Scandinavian interiors, these expressions mean clear design that can be enjoyed without being distracted by too many details. Lighting in particular, plays an essential role in creating a soothing ambience.

This ceiling lamp has a unique and clever design that is in service of functionality and the Swedish idea of “good design”. The base shape is quite traditional, with upward facing lightbulbs and multiple arms, arranged symmetrically. However, the three arms aren’t symmetrical but face one way, and are accompanied by three “floating hats”. These additional arms are similarly curved, and hold the brass hats that have several functions; they serve as decorative elements, while also reflecting the light that is distributed upwards. The light brightens up the brass’s colour, and creates playful shadows on the ceiling. The elongated opalescent glass shades have a diamond pattern that becomes more visible when the light is turned on. The design is very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of Scandinavian Modernism.

Surrounded by stunning natural features from fjords to evergreen forests, the Nordic nations have developed a unique, nature-loving and understated interior design style. Ceiling lamps, such as this 1950s model have an important role to create an ambience that is cosy and stylish while not compromising on quality and functionality.
