Antique Silver toothpick or cocktail stick holder, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, circa 1850. The holder in the form of a continental livery uniformed male figure holding an open umbrella with pierced holes for toothpicks or cocktail sticks. The holder on knopped stem and square pierced foliage and wriggle work base with four turned paw feet supports. Marks in base, 10 and maker’s mark A over JM and S within lozenge. for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Disposable wooden toothpicks were introduced in the early 19th century; figural holders to display the toothpicks on the table became popular in Continental Europe, particularly in Portugal, Brazil and Italy. Measures: height 8.00 inches. Base foot to foot 2.75 inches. Item Weight: 205 grams.
