Small Chinese Scholar Taihu Stone on Display Stand
-
Description
A small Chinese Scholar Rock of Taihu type on a fitted hardwood stand. The stone displays an unique and elegant cantilevered shape. The deep brown tone of the stone has a dark red tint that is contrasted by a few strokes of white veins. The surface has become very smooth, polished by the flowing water in the Taihu Lake for millenniums. Several grottos were featured: some interlinked while the other open through, providing the viewer a very meditative experience when viewing this stone. At different angles. the stone reveals different form and color that further engages the viewer.
A remarkable work of art created by mother nature, Taihu lake stones were among the four famous stones since the ancient time in China. They have been collected and prized by Chinese scholars since Tang dynasty when they were used in garden design. Later on smaller pieces like this one found their way into the scholar's private study serving as a miniature form of nature for meditation. In China, they are also known as Gongshi or "worshipped stone"; and in the west, known also as Spirit Stone. With their exotic shape with and curious cavities and surface texture, these stones were highly appreciated as an inspiration to contain the nature in human's adobe.
