    BIOGRAPHY

FRANCIS TERRADE, known as « Fantôme », was born on March 20, 1957 in Cognac in the beautiful country of the Charente. His “project” was implemented 26 years ago when he was still living in an industrial wasteland environment. Abandoned cathedrals of a bygone past of forgotten places where he loved to lose himself welcomed him as sanctuaries of reflections and reveries. Observing this solitude of dust and flying insects, of stretched canvases where the light that pierced through fractured tiles was imprisoned, in oblique rays. Very high in the sky of the ceilings, hung up on metal frames under reinforced glass, directed towards the ground, sparkled still, transparent barely even after the fat deposit of time: lamps.
Suspended or applied, glasses in the shape of a woman’s breast, flat enamelled skirts, curves shaded by articulated feet, these shapes were much more than lamps. A gallery of objects, forgotten by the marauders who seek only immediate gain would open the ground for copper wires, without interest for this suspended poetry. It was like a sign, his luck. He became a marauder of the air, sometimes 20 meters from the ground. He had found "his material" and the "logical" extension of his passion for light that he already conveyed for all the pretexts that were given to him: theater and music mainly.
For some time the idea of the workshop had been in the right place. Activating in assemblies and polishing of copper with these objects out of nothingness. His first exhibition in 1996 was a triumph, associating him with the "Chats Pelés" Christian Olivier for the presentation course: a playful and chic labyrinth where strolled an amazed audience.
Past this upheaval of public confrontation, he explored new forms and modelled the human body. Trees in a mountain forest inspired this representation. These trees had a peculiarity: they grew laterally, like bodies in painful extensions, which lengthened their branches naked, to seek light. His first sculptures were awkward, half human and half vegetal, as if rooted and light at the same time. The laborious journey and the love of women led him to the representation of the female body, which he sought to reproduce in motion. Copper, until then in addition to assembly, became the main material. The soldering of a tin alloy that allowed him to glue the parts in the first period, he shaped it and modeled it in slender, elegant characters. This representation was during the two decades that followed, the model of his sculptures.
For the last three years he has been searching for volume. The technological upheaval of the bulbs and the new standards of accessories forced him to renew. Having always worked in reflection and thus each piece was wearing a hat for a return of light. For his last realizations, he cut out and assembled in symmetrical geometry triangles, to make flattened cones. The idea came to him to stretch his cones and to make the strategic parts of the body into several distinct elements which he assembled, until finding ideal proportions.
Today, like lighthouses, his sculptures of lamps brave the storm of the disposable "low-cost" and are enough of little energy.
