  • Description
This pair of late mid-century French armchairs combines a visually stunning structural body with an expert construction technique and high-quality materials. In France, the 1960s saw brilliant designers and architects working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored modern shapes and forms. This pair of sculptural lounge chairs shows how successful these experiments were.

As with the UK and much of Europe, there was something of a design renaissance in France following the Second World War, due to developments in materials and technology. In France, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as the chairs of this pair. The solid wooden structures immediately stand out, their vertical and horizontal lines are very well combined to create the unique look. The wedged tenon and mortise joinery defines the look of this pair, which is refined but rustic at the same time. From the spindles forming the back to the leather straps of the seat, these lounge chairs show clear evidence that they are the products of a highly skilled craftsman. The design is further elevated by the newly upholstered back and seat cushions with a stylish pattern and texture.

With the major rise in popularity that mid-century modern has been experiencing, it’s easy to see touches of 1960s French style in contemporary homes. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the brilliant and stylish design remains timeless. With an outstanding balance of horizontal and vertical lines, quality materials, and French design elements, this pair is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
