Antique English Majolica Plate With Embossed White Geraniums Over Turquoise
-
Description
This lovely and rare Majolica plate depicts geranium blossoms, leaves, and stems in white bas-relief over a hand-painted turquoise field. The scalloped rim is outlined in fuchsia and white. The plate was made in a mold for the bas-relief effect and then painted with the accent colors. The English maker is unidentified. The plate reflects the Victorian taste of love for the natural world as evident in its Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau influences. This plate would make a wonderful and cheerful statement hanging on a wall.
