Early 20th Century Neoclassical Wall Tapestry Hand Painted

Sold Sold
  • Description
Beautiful antique Italian wall tapestry 1900s. A beautiful romantic neoclassical scene hand painted with the herb juice technique. With the grass juice technique, the drawing of the preparatory cartoon is not woven, but "painted" by making the canvas (often a silk straw) absorb various vegetable pigments, the result is a pictorial rendering similar to watercolor that was very fashion during the 18th century and beyond.
The natural pigments were diluted with alum and lemon juice, elements which had the function of fixatives and which guaranteed the vividness and brightness of the colors.
The color was spread over and over so that the fabric completely absorbed the pigment; the raw materials from which the color is obtained were the most disparate, ford, walnut husk, saffron (the color obtained was the saffron), a recurring ingredient was the cabbage sauce: a puree of cabbage leaves at the base of many colors cold.
