Danish Cabinetmaker Armchairs with Stained Beech Legs, Denmark 1930s

$ 10,450
  • Description
    This pair from the era of Danish Art Deco is a beautiful testimony of the Scandinavian interpretation of the movement, while also showing early signs of modernism. Art Deco was a lush era in the history of design. The era flourished with the help of high-quality materials and designs, showcased by these armchairs.

    Art Deco was a new style movement born in Paris during the early 20th century. It represented post-war society and its aim was to inspire playfulness, positivity, and hope for the future. When Art Deco furniture came into existence, it initially sought to replicate the geometric art of pioneers like Picasso. For this reason, an emphasis was placed on bold lines and unusual forms. Here, the scalloped edges on the backrests showcase this boldness, albeit in a restrained Danish manner. These armchairs show many of the movement’s characteristics, including perfect symmetry, luxury and exquisite wood. The modern feel of each chair, as well as their ability to elevate any space, are where the appeal of Art Deco lies. With the gently rounded edges, these chairs have a stylish flow to them. The tapered legs in the front have an appealing detail, brass “shoes” which together with the colourful cross stitches on the backs are playful forms of ornamentation. The straight back legs serve the role of securing stability.

    Furniture of the era was seen across the US, Europe, Paris, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. As this pair shows, many renowned Art Deco furniture designers started utilizing quality woods and luxurious upholstery. The production rate of furniture pieces was confined to small quantities produced by a few manufacturers, which makes them all the more special.
