Danish Cabinetmaker Easy Chairs with Elm Inlays, Denmark 1940s

Sold Sold
  • Description
Simplicity, functionality, and elegance - these are the basic aspects of Danish design and, accordingly, of this pair of sophisticated easy chairs. The design dating from the early mid-century era, shows qualities of both Danish Art Deco and Modernism.

With a scalloped back and gently rounded edges, these chairs have a stylish flow to them. This is enhanced by the elm wood, which is used to inlay the edges, giving the chairs’ upholstery a contrast full of life. The tapered legs in the front have an appealing curve, while the straight back legs serve the role of securing stability. This pair gives any space a distinct look thanks to the stark contrast between materials and colours with strong but gentle lines. The clever use of the straight and rounded edges of both the frame and the upholstered body shows not only design prowess, but also that quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the cabinetmaker who created these chairs. Even on the large upholstered areas, there is an implication of movement. Danish mid-century furniture is wonderful for being able to capture a sense of movement and drama.

Apart from the fact that this pair of easy chairs creates contrast, it also creates a sense of symmetry in any space. The subtle decorative qualities stemming from the early 20th century art movements and the simple lines deriving from the inter-war design movements give these chairs their elegance that makes them truly timeless.
