  • Description
This pair of Børge Mogensen lounge chairs was designed in 1956 with the model number 2256 for Fredericia Stolefabrik. The Danish designer’s most iconic pieces were developed at Fredericia’s workshop.

Børge Mogensen was one of the most influential designers in shaping Danish Modern design and Fredericia’s founding designer from 1955. His design philosophy was strongly centred around to create everyday objects that would enrich people’s everyday lives and would endure for generations. Like the designer, Model 2256 is acclaimed for the masterful sense of materials and proportions. The design’s beauty and distinctive look are achieved by the emphasis on the simple horizontal and vertical lines and surfaces. The clean, aesthetically-pleasing design is dominated by the cubical frame made of solid oak with finger joints. When viewed from the front, the chairs have a linear design that is typical of Mogensen, but when viewed from the side, the gentle curves of the spindle back and seat rest can be seen. This model - the more compact version of his high-back model 2254 chair - is also called the “sled chair” named after the sled base. The blonde oak’s refined, yet rustic look was among Mogensen’s most preferred natural materials as it complements and highlights the structure beautifully.

This pair of model 2256 lounge chairs is a gorgeous high-quality design piece that will make a statement in any modern environment. Mogensen was one of the most important among a generation of furniture designers who made the concept of “Danish Modern” known throughout the world.

    About the designer:
Børge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinetmaker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942.

At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950, he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa”.

Mogensen’s goal has always been to design and produce quality furniture for the people, with longevity, quality and timelessness in his focus. Because of this, Mogensen was known as “the people’s designer”, a true pioneer in democratic design. In 1972, he was awarded the C.F. Hansen Medal and was appointed Honorary Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts in London. ~H.
