Oak Side Chair with Paper Cord Seat by a Danish Cabinetmaker, Denmark ca 1950s
-
Description
Paper cord woven across an open wood frame has been used to form the seats of Danish chairs since the 1940s, but through the 1950s and 1960s it became perhaps the most distinctive and for some people, the type of seat most closely associated with chairs from the Danish Modern period.
This wooden side chair has a rustic yet modern design. The oak frame has an interesting structure, with unexpected shapes and forms. This is most apparent in the construction of the bent arms with widening armrests and the lower part connecting to the legs from the outside. While the lines are predominantly crisp and streamlined, there is also space for imperfections with uneven edges. In combination with the paper cord seat, this lends an organic touch to the design. The square legs are connected by stretchers, with the front one thicker and higher than the rest. The solid oak frame is completed by the woven rope seat with a geometric pattern. In this weaving technique the knots or joins are made to connect one strand end to another and are covered in the gussets or pockets on the bottom of the chair seat, so they are not visible. This results in the tightly woven pattern that is very aesthetically pleasing. Danish cord became an important material in the Danish Modern period of the 1940s and 1950s. Renowned designers such as Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen employed Danish cord in some of their most iconic designs.
When thinking about custom, sustainable, or heirloom quality furniture, the materials used are as important as the design itself. One material that is often vastly underrated is Danish cord. Noteworthy for its durability, Danish cord is also beloved for its functional and aesthetic qualities.
