George III Chippendale Mahogany Serpentine Chest, James Winter & Sons

Sold Sold
  • Description
A fine circa 1770 George III period Chippendale style commode or chest of four drawers of serpentine form having mahogany case with later circa 1810 Regency period 'redecorating' of Gonçalo alves cross-banding and finely-cast gilt-brass lion's head ring pulls; the top of top drawer stamped James Winter & Sons, 151, 153, 155 Wardour St., Soho, London. While aesthetically appealing and visually interesting in its own right, this piece is also intriguing from an English furniture history perspective as an example illustrating the progression of "style" and "taste" in the late Georgian period from Chippendale to neoclassical, and it's enduring appeal in the Victorian period as retailed by the Winter firm between 1840 and 1882.

    Biography:

    James Winter & Sons:

James Winter was a prominent London furniture appraiser, broker, retailer, and undertaker based in Soho, selling both new and older work and according to his trade card, offering 'a Liberal Price for Second hand Furniture in Large and Small quantities.' The firm opened at 101 Wardour Street in 1823 and in 1840 his sons joined the firm and moved its premises to nos. 151-155, where it operated until 1882.
