European Organic Wood Dining Chairs with Beautiful Grain, Europe ca 1950s
-
Description
With a robust organic form and an earth-toned palette, this set of six dining chairs is the embodiment of 20th century brutalist design. In furniture and décor, the Brutalist movement was somber, giving importance to eerie organic and rugged shapes in dark, earthy tones.
The combination of static and organic shapes making up the structure of these chairs leads the design aesthetic. The brutalist style’s basic characteristics are all present: unornamented, solid wood, exposed joints, and raw wooden surfaces. At the same time, the rounded edges are more delicate and as the sole form of ornamentation there are carved arches on the legs of each chair. These arches create an interesting look with the mostly straight lines and prevent the design from looking heavy. The backs and seats provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood. The solid wood is hard and rich in colour with a fine texture, which is partially why it has been the most prized material of European 20th century design. In these chairs, the grain of the wood is very striking, creating a dynamic look through the swirls, loops, and colour scheme. Aesthetically, these dining chairs are the antithesis to the furniture of the late 20th century that were often perceived as tacky and vulgar.
Wood has never gone out of style, and pieces with an emphasis on the unfinished or natural look are only gaining popularity today. These brutalist chairs are equally striking standing alone, or as parts of a dining set in an interior with a medley of styles.
