Large Oval Box
Probably Mount Lebanon, New York, circa 1840
Maple, white pine, copper tacks, original yellow wash,
5 ½ x 13 ½ x 9 ⅜ inches
A closely related example in the same yellow wash is illustrated in Mario S. DePillis and Christian Goodwille, Gather up the Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection (New Haven and London, 2008), p. 307.
PROVENANCE:
Descended in the family of Margaret Gill, who resided with the Shakers at Mount Lebanon as a child and took the box when she left the community; Recently acquired by us as part of a fine collection of Shaker boxes. -
