2 CHAIRS MODEL 511, JOSEF HOFFMANN / THONET (1904)

Sold Sold
  • Description
Inspiration: This chair designed by Joseph Hoffmann and manufactured by Thonet Gebrüder stands out for its clean lines, typical of the Viennese style of the early twentieth century. Of particular note is the stretched line of the upright starting from the front foot to extend until forming the backrest. This technique is found in Art Nouveau furniture, mainly those from Belgium such as Henry Van de Velde or Gustave Serrurier-Bovy. The structure is made of solid stained beech. The 42x42cm seat is made of molded plywood.
The three wands of the file are turned elements. Three perforated holes on the upper headband echo them.
This high-end chair furnished, among other things, reception rooms around the world. It was sold in American sales catalogues.

Designer: Josef Hoffmann (1870 – 1956) was a Viennese architect and designer who marked the history of design with his resolutely modernist achievements, rejecting any reference to the traditional styles of the past. In all his creations, he removes the curve and reminders to nature by drawing on a repertoire of geometric, rectilinear and refined shapes inspired by cubism. French Art Deco takes up its motifs in the 20s. Josef Hoffmann always favors beautiful, utilitarian and functional furniture.
Josef Hoffmann became one of the undisputed leaders and spokesman of the Vienna Secession from its inception in 1897. He then founded the Wiener Werkstätte to produce high-quality furniture and household objects for series production. This concept of arts and crafts workshops is inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. He met the founders, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Charles Robert Ashbee, during his travels in Britain. This Glasgow School has a great influence on his work.
His rationalism, source of the modern movement, is well illustrated in the decoration of the cabaret Fledermaus where also manufactures the furniture and the famous cutlery. He implements his concept of total works of art (Gesamtkunstwerke).
Josef Hoffmann’s furniture such as his “Sewing Machine” in 1908 were produced by the firm J. & J. Kohn.

Thonet is a German furniture manufacturer created by Michael Thonet. Since the nineteenth century, it has been known worldwide for its curved wooden bistro seats. Millions of seats have been sold thanks to an innovative marketing technique offering low-cost, robust, kit-packed, mass-produced products with an international sales network. Its iconic and most emblematic seat is the bistro chair n°14 from 1859. After the First World War, at the end of the 20s, the Thonet firm offers for the first time modernist furniture in the Bauhaus style. This small piece of furniture is characterized by its curved tubular steel structure with often cantilevered or sled legs. Their designers are Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, etc.
