Description
Pair of lapis lazuli and ormolu mounted 'Medici' vases after Galberg
French, 20th Century
Height 52cm, diameter 32.5cm
These stunning vases are made from lapis lazuli and ormolu: an exceptional and precious combination of materials, appropriate for the superb design by the Russian maker Galberg, which is best known from examples in malachite, including the monumental example in the Grand Reception Hall of Windsor Castle.
They are in Campana form, in the so called 'Medici Vase' design: bell-shaped bodies which are reminiscent of Ancient Classical vases, especially calyx kraters. They are adorned with a bands of ormolu rings and friezes towards the base, are gadrooned, and lined with a radiant gilt-bronze interior.
While malachite is a more common use of material in this design, lapis is no less effective: in this particular pair the wonderful golden glimmers within the stone match the luxurious gilt-bronze mounts. Of French twentieth century craftsmanship, these fine vases perfectly encapsulate the regal feel of late Imperial Russia, from where the design came. -
