Pair of William & Mary side chairs

Sold Sold
  • Description
The robust turnings on this pair of side chairs reflect the influence of immigrant craftsmen to Philadelphia; the stretcher turnings may suggest a French cultural influence. The turned columnar section in the middle of the rear stiles also appears on a related armchair, likely made by the same craftsman, and represents the best of early Philadelphia woodturning. See Alan Miller, “Flux in Design and Method in Early 18th Century Philadelphia Furniture,” pp. 34-5.
    Ex-collection William K. du Pont
