Swedish Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Sweden 1940s

Sold Sold
  • Description
The 1940s was the dawn of incorporating new knowledge of ergonomic research into seating design. Swedish designers excelled in this aspect as well, infusing it with traditional craftsmanship and elegant cosiness to give an overall relaxed silhouette.

With its classic shape paired with modern design elements, this model combines the best design characteristics of the 1940s. The large, enveloping backrest dictates the shape of these chairs, as it visually forms most of the structure. Similarly to club chairs - that are favourites for modernist enthusiasts - these chairs’ arms are a single piece with the chair back resulting in a wide design profile. They are also upholstered in fabric for the most comfort. The design is just as focused on the aesthetics as on employing exquisite techniques and materials. While initially club chairs were called ‘comfortable chairs’, they soon began to be known by their now famous moniker because of their popularity among clubs, letting customers sink into them with a drink. These chairs provide the same comfort thanks to their gently enveloping backs and seat cushions covered in an elegant brown fabric. The upholstery’s lines also serve as decoration, sectioning the chairs visually which adds depth to the design. The short tapered wooden feet are unmistakeable Scandinavian elements of the design, adding the traditional organicity of wood to the look. Like the chairs’ top, the back legs are splayed outwards, opening up the design while providing plenty of structural support.

The most traditional use for such club chair-like models is in the living room, but they work especially well in an open floor plan as well. The early mid-century modern aesthetic lends itself well to most styles as it is timelessly elegant and high-quality in terms of materials and execution.
