    HIPPOLYTE (1797-1871) AND POLYDORE PAUQUET

Hippolyte Louis Em. Pauquet (born 1797) - Polydore Pauquet (ca 1800 - 1860).
An Album of Original Watercolor Drawings for [PREVSOT, Florent - LEMAIRE, C.L. “Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d’Europe (Passereaux)”.
    Paris: ca 1834].
Folio (12 x 9 6/8 in). 80 fine pencil and watercolor drawings on paper of birds in their natural settings (image size 9 2/8 x 6 inches), laid-down on heavy stock. In a fine 20th-century binding of green morocco gilt by F. Saulnier; slipcase.

Provenance: Bookplate of Marcel Jeanson on the front paste-down, Ornithological library.

A charming album of watercolors of birds for Lemair’s very popular “Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux…” by the Freres Pauquet, reknowned 19th-century illustrators of a number of very popular works including “Modes et Costumes Historiques Dessinés et Gravés par Pauquet Frères d’apres les Meilleurs Maitres de Chaque Epoque” (ca 1865) and H. Lucas’s “Histoire Naturelle des Lépidoptères Exotiques” (1845). Each watercolor captures the essence of 169 different birds, from the subtle colors of small brown sparrows to the startling iridescent greens and blues of the common magpie, and the bright reds and yellows of various species of finch.

From the distinguished Ornithological library of Marcel Jeanson, author of “Les Oiseaux de France” (1941-1999), who commissioned Master Painter Roger Reboussin (1881-1965) in Paris in 1935 to portray all the birds of France in their natural habitat. In 1942 Marcel Jeanson died, but Madame Jeanson allowed Reboussin to continue his work until his own death in 1965, by which time he had painted more than 400 species. The work was eventually published in 1991. Nissen IVB 541, Zimmer II, 496.
