This European mid-century side chair carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – inspired by traditional materials and styles.

The design’s aesthetic is defined by the expertly woven rush panels and the sculpted details on the arms and front legs. The back and seat showcase the diagonal cross pattern commonly referred to as the “rush weave”. Not only is this technique outstandingly sturdy, it is beautiful as well, especially paired with the oaken frame. It also counters the sculpted, historic looking parts with its raw, organic rusticity. In a true mid-century modern manner, this chair is much more straightforward in construction and less pompous in nature than its forbearers, with clean, visible joinery and precise woodworking. Besides the carvings, there are subtle indents on the arms while the armrests have a pronounced curve that is repeated on the little “ears” on the top of the back. While there are numerous forms of decoration, the chair preserves its clean, clutter-free look. It is exactly this skill that European mid-century designers were in possession of, giving their work a timeless appeal.

The skilled craftsmanship is evident making sure that this side chair is durable, sturdy, and functional, while the use of high-quality wood and rush make it a beautiful design heirloom.
