William Sommer

American, 1867 - 1949
Detroit born American artist William Sommer was a mostly self-taught modernist painter. He received early instruction from artist and lithographer Julius Melschers. Sommer travelled to Europe and trained with Professors Johann Herterich, Ludwig Schmid, and Adolph Menzel. In 1907 he accepted a position with Otis Lithograph Co., of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1911 he co-founded Kokoon Arts Club to promote modern art in Cleveland. In 1914 he relocated to Brandywine, Ohio. William Sommer paintings remain popular today.
