Great 19th-century Italian painting, Our Lady of the Olive Tree
-
Description
A magnificent religious painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas painting, on the first canvas, depicting a Madonna with Child, of great elegance and pictorial quality. The composition harks back to the famous devotional series of Our Lady of the Olive Tree by Nicolò Barabino (1832-1891), a subject reproduced by the famous Ligurian artist in various formats. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an expertise, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.)
The Virgin is seated frontally in a monumental pose, wrapped in a large white cloak reminiscent of an oriental veil. Behind her is a magnificent floral-patterned fabric reminiscent of medieval damask tapestries, so beloved by Pre-Raphaelite and 19th-century academic painters. At her feet, a large olive branch and citrus fruits appear, symbols of peace and paradise, in a refined reference to Renaissance symbolism.
Artwork of great decorative charm, its rich color palette makes it suitable for both classic and modern settings. Contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame, with some losses (see photo). The artwork has a small tear in the upper left corner (see photo), but is generally in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 108.5 x W 53.5 cm. - More Information
