Edith White
American, 1855 - 1946
California artist, Edith White. Born in Decorah, Iowa in 1855, White was a member of Mills College's first graduating class in 1874. White then studied at the School of Design in San Francisco under Virgil Williams and later at the Art Students League in New York City. She established her first studio in Los Angeles in 1882 and later moved to Pasadena where she co-founded the Pasadena Art Association. White taught art at the Raja-Yoga School in Point Loma and later at her studio in Berkeley, California.
White exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association, California State Fair, Pasadena Art Association, California Midwinter International Exposition, Ruskin Art Club, Fine Arts League, Pasadena Art Union and Sanborn and Vail Gallery, among others. Her work is held in the permanent collections of Mills College, Mt. Holyoke College, San Diego Historical Society, Santa Fe Railway and Denver Public Library, among others.
